Mark January 1, 2029, on your calendar. That’s how long the FCC will now allow existing foreign-made routers (which means virtually every consumer router sold in the U.S.) to keep getting security updates. It turns out the routers hijacked in one of the government’s most-cited Chinese cyberattacks weren’t Chinese brands at all. They were mostly Cisco and Netgear routers that had reached “end of life” status. The FCC says consumers using routers in homes and small offices don’t need to do anything right now.
